304 and 316 stainless steel floor wastes are often specified interchangeably, but the difference matters once the installation environment involves chlorides — coastal air, pool chemicals, or regular washdown with cleaning agents.
304 stainless — the standard-duty choice
Our 3Monkeez floor waste range in 304 stainless is WaterMark certified and built for general commercial use — schools, public amenities, healthcare and industrial sites where corrosion exposure is moderate. It's the right default for the majority of commercial fit-outs and the more cost-effective option when 316 isn't required.
316 stainless — when chloride exposure is higher
Our 316 stainless floor waste range adds molybdenum to the alloy, which is what actually improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. Reach for 316 on coastal properties, pool surrounds, industrial washdown areas with harsher cleaning chemicals, or anywhere the floor waste will see prolonged exposure to salt air or chlorinated water. Paying for 316 where 304 would do is wasted spec; under-specifying on a coastal job is a callback waiting to happen.
Quick rule of thumb
If the site is within a few kilometres of the coast, involves a pool, or runs harsh washdown chemicals regularly — go 316. Everything else — general commercial and residential, minimal chloride exposure — 304 is the right call and the better value. Both ranges are WaterMark certified and compliant with AS/NZS 3500.
