Accessible bathroom kits are the biggest single product line we sell, and the question we get most isn't “is this compliant?” but “which one do I order?” The kits look similar at a glance. They differ in the toilet suite, the basin, the handing options, whether a shower is included, the finish, and which type of project each is listed for. This guide puts them side by side using each listing's own specifications.

Decision 1: commercial or NDIS/SDA

The two chrome disabled kits are listed for different projects, and each listing points to the other if you've picked the wrong one. What actually differs in the box:

  • Toilet suite. The commercial kit's suite is 805 x 375 x 890mm, rated to 200kg for heavy commercial use, with a trap range of 180–325mm supplied. The NDIS/SDA kit's suite is 800 x 385 x 860mm and comes with both a 180mm P-trap and a 100–250mm S-trap.
  • Basin. The NDIS/SDA kit uses a wall-hung disabled basin with a shelf, available with the shelf on the left or right. The commercial kit uses a disabled hand basin without the shelf option.
  • Everything else is common: extended-lever disabled mixer, pop-up waste, bottle trap, backrest, stainless roll holder, 90° grab bar, straight grab bar and braille signage.

For SDA work, the NDIS/SDA listing notes that the fixtures can be considered alongside AS1428.1:2021 and the Specialist Disability Accommodation Design Standard (released 12 July 2025). The SDA assessor signs off the dwelling, not the kit, so share the kit's component list with them early.

If the toilet itself is the main concern for an NDIS job, the Bluegum BLUDIS-1 back-to-wall rimless toilet (200kg rated, P and S trap included) is also sold on its own; our BLUDIS-1 backrest guide covers pairing it.

Decision 2: do you need the shower too?

The Complete Bathroom & Shower Kit ($2,999) is the one-order option for a commercial accessible room with a shower. On top of the toilet and basin components (here a back-to-wall rimless pan with raised grey seat and a 450 x 350 x 180mm care basin), it adds:

  • Folding shower seat, white slatted, 960 x 390mm
  • T grab shower rail with adjustable rail slider
  • Hand shower with 1500mm hose
  • Shower mixer with extended lever
  • Robe hook and soap dish

Its two handing choices let the toilet and the shower be set up independently, so you can match each to its own transfer side.

Decision 3: handing and shelf side

Handing is set by the room, not by preference. The grab rails, backrest and basin position all depend on which side the user transfers from onto the pan, so measure the transfer space on the drawings before ordering. Getting it wrong leaves you with rails on the wrong wall. On the NDIS/SDA kits, the basin shelf side is chosen separately so it sits on the usable side of the basin in your layout. For rail positions and heights, see our AS1428.1 grab rail spacing guide.

Decision 4: finish

The matte black and brushed gold kits follow the same pattern as the chrome kits with finishes matched across the tapware, trap, backrest, roll holder and grab rails (the gold kit's tapware is by Nero). One difference worth noticing when you compare listings: the chrome kits list a 300mm straight grab bar, while the matte black and gold kits list a 450mm straight bar. Check the bar lengths against your layout drawing rather than assuming every kit is identical.

Ambulant or disabled?

Ambulant cubicles serve people with reduced mobility who don't use a wheelchair, and have their own fixture and rail requirements. The full Ambulant Bathroom Kit ($1,300) includes the ambulant suite, two ambulant grab bars, a compact basin, extended-lever mixer, roll holder, coat hook and braille sign; Bluegum's BGABK1 ($749) is the toilet and two 450 x 450mm angled grab bars only. Our ambulant vs disabled kit guide covers which one a brief calls for.

What a kit can't do on its own

A kit gets the right fixtures to site in one order. Whether the finished room meets AS1428.1 depends on the room: circulation space, fixture heights and set-outs, rail fixing into suitable backing, door hardware and signage placement. Check the layout and install details with your designer or certifier before ordering, and use our guides on backrests, lever tapware and braille signage for the individual components.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the commercial kit and the NDIS/SDA kit?
The commercial kit has a 200kg-rated suite (805 x 375 x 890mm) and a disabled hand basin, and is listed for commercial use only. The NDIS/SDA kit has an 800 x 385 x 860mm suite with P and S traps and a wall-hung basin with a left or right shelf, and is listed for NDIS, SDA and aged care work.

How do I choose left or right hand?
Match the handing to the side the user transfers from onto the pan in your room layout. The grab rails, backrest and basin positions follow from that.

Does buying a kit make my bathroom AS1428.1 compliant?
No kit can do that on its own. Compliance depends on the finished room — layout, circulation space, heights and installation — so have the design checked by your designer or certifier.

Is there a kit that includes the shower?
Yes. The Complete Bathroom & Shower Kit adds a 960mm folding shower seat, T grab rail with slider, hand shower, extended-lever shower mixer, robe hook and soap dish. It is listed for commercial use.
