A fully compliant grab rail installed in the wrong position is still a non-compliant bathroom. AS1428.1 sets specific requirements for placement, not just rail construction — and placement is where fit-outs most often fall short at inspection.
Rail construction
Start with a rail that meets the base spec — our 304 stainless straight grab rails (available in 400mm, 800mm and 1000mm) are AS1428.1 compliant on construction: correct diameter, load rating, and slip-resistant finish. Construction compliance is the easy part — placement is where projects go wrong.
Height and spacing
AS1428.1 specifies grab rail mounting height relative to the finished floor level, horizontal clearance from adjacent walls and fixtures, and minimum rail length for the fixture it's supporting (toilet, shower, or bath). These figures are precise and non-negotiable at inspection — always check the current AS1428.1 clause against the specific fixture layout rather than working from memory or a previous job, since placement requirements differ between a WC grab rail and a shower grab rail.
Combination rails
For spaces doing double duty, products like the Mecca Care grab/towel rail combination provide a compliant grab rail with integrated towel storage — useful where floor space is tight, but the same placement rules apply regardless of the rail's secondary function. A combination rail doesn't get placement leniency just because it also holds a towel.
Before you install
Confirm the wall substrate can take the specified load rating (grab rails need solid blocking, not just plasterboard fixings), confirm mounting height against the current AS1428.1 clause for that specific fixture, and confirm horizontal clearance from the fixture itself. Get all three signed off before tiling closes up the wall cavity — retrofitting blocking after the fact is a much bigger job than getting it right at rough-in.
