Every commercial drainage line needs points where it can be inspected, rodded and tested without digging or breaking a floor. On a slab, that's usually a bolted trap: a cover screwed down flush with the finished floor over an access point into the drain below. The Allproof bolted trap for PVC DWV is one of our steadiest drainage sellers. Here's how to specify the right one.
What the Allproof bolted trap is
Allproof lists it for drainage inspection and maintenance access in commercial installations. The features that matter on site:
- Puddle flange base, so the body is locked into the slab and the floor waterproofing has something to seal to.
- Lock-down screws included, with a security screw option available for public areas where you don't want covers lifted.
- Class B load rated to AS 3996.
- Covers in 316 stainless steel, brass or chrome plated finishes.
Sizes, finishes and prices
| Pipe size | Brass | Chrome plated | 316 stainless |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65mm | $69.19 (BT65PVC BR) | $69.19 (BT65PVC CP) | $88.96 (BT65PVC SS) |
| 80mm | $69.19 (BT80PVC BR) | $69.19 (BT80PVC CP) | $88.96 (BT80PVC SS) |
| 100mm | $69.19 (BT100PVC BR) | $69.19 (BT100PVC CP) | $88.96 (BT100PVC SS) |
| 150mm | — | — | $242.16 (BT150PVC SS) |
Prices as listed at the time of writing. The 65–100mm traps fit 65mm to 100mm PVC DWV pipe. The 150mm version comes in stainless only and connects with a 150mm PVC socket. Brass and chrome cost the same at every size, and stainless is about $20 more per trap in 65–100mm.
Brass, chrome or 316 stainless?
- 316 stainless is the default for commercial kitchens, food prep, wash-down areas, car parks and coastal sites: anywhere with cleaning chemicals, salt or constant water. It's also the only choice at 150mm. If you're matching it to stainless floor wastes in the same room, see 304 vs 316 floor wastes for why 316 is the safer grade in harsh areas.
- Chrome plated suits finished bathrooms and amenities where the cover should match the tapware and floor wastes.
- Brass suits plant rooms, back-of-house and areas where appearance doesn't matter, or where a brass finish matches other fittings.
The Class B rating
AS 3996 sorts access covers and grates by the load they're designed to carry. Class A covers are for pedestrian-only areas; Class B is a step up, rated for areas that see light vehicle traffic as well as foot traffic. That makes this trap suitable for most commercial floors and many paved areas, but not for heavy vehicle zones such as loading docks and truck routes, which need a higher class. If the trap is going anywhere a forklift or truck can reach, check the required class with the designer before ordering.
Install and access tips
- Set the height to the finished floor, not the slab. A trap that sits proud is a trip hazard; one that's low collects water and grime.
- Seal the floor waterproofing to the puddle flange in wet areas, the same way you would at a floor waste.
- Use the security screws in public toilets, schools and anywhere covers are likely to be tampered with.
- Think about testing. An inspection point is also where the drain gets tested before handover; our guide to test plugs and drain protection covers the options, and the Testite DN100 mechanical cleanout test plug ($265) seals a 100mm cleanout by hand without hoses or gauges.
- If the drain passes through a fire-rated slab below the trap, the penetration needs protecting; see our low profile fire collar guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size bolted trap do I need?
Match it to the PVC DWV pipe. The 65mm, 80mm and 100mm traps fit 65–100mm pipe in brass, chrome or 316 stainless. For 150mm pipe there's a stainless-only version with a 150mm PVC socket.
Can a bolted trap go in a driveway or car park?
The Allproof trap is Class B to AS 3996, a rating used for areas with light vehicle traffic. Heavy vehicle areas such as loading docks need a higher class, so check with the designer.
Brass, chrome or stainless?
316 stainless for kitchens, wash-down, coastal and chemical exposure; chrome for finished bathrooms; brass for plant rooms and back-of-house. Brass and chrome are the same price; stainless is about $20 more at 65–100mm.
Can the cover be secured against tampering?
Yes. Lock-down screws are included and a security screw option is available for public areas.
