When water or sewage can't drain to the street by gravity, it has to collect in a well and be pumped out. You can build that from separate parts: a well, a pump, valves, a float and an alarm. Or you can buy a packaged pump station with all of it already assembled.

The packaged option in the Pump Stations range is the Maxijet MPS.

What's in a Maxijet MPS

Per the listing, the MPS is a complete single pump station built on a polyethylene pump well, pre-plumbed with a Hyjet submersible pump, a deluxe high level alarm and a square Class A poly lid. It's delivered pre-plumbed, so on site you set the well, connect the inlet and discharge, and have power connected.

Choose the duty

Each well size comes in three versions:

Version Pump Outlet Use
Stormwater low flow (2 L/s) Hyjet HV180-1A vortex 40mm Stormwater or greywater from a small catchment
Stormwater high flow (5 L/s) Hyjet HV750-1A vortex 50mm Stormwater from larger roofs, driveways or paved areas
Sewage Hyjet HWG32-11-1A grinder 50mm Sewage that can't gravity drain to the sewer

The stormwater versions use cast iron vortex pumps with a float switch. The sewage version uses a grinder pump, which cuts solids up so they fit the discharge line. See our guides to drainage pumps and grinder pumps for more on each.

Choose the well size

Well Stormwater low flow Stormwater high flow Sewage
MPS250 (250L) $3,098.65 $3,263.65 $4,016.05
MPS700 (700L) $3,447.35 $4,016.05 $4,547.35
MPS1200 (1200L) $4,896.05 $5,042.35 $5,941.05

A bigger well gives two things. First, the pump runs longer and less often, which is easier on it. Second, it holds more in reserve if the pump fails or the power is out, which buys time before anything overflows. For sewage especially, that reserve matters: it's what gives you time to get a pump replaced before a house has nowhere to drain. Your plumbing design and local authority requirements will usually set a minimum.

When to build your own instead

A packaged single pump station is ideal for a single house, granny flat or small building. Build from parts when you need:

  • Two pumps for duty/standby, which most commercial and multi-unit sewage stations need. The Maxijet MPPS pump wells come pre-plumbed for dual pumps.
  • A larger well than 1200L, up to 5000L in the MPPS range.
  • A different pump, larger or three phase, than the MPS versions use.
  • A trafficable lid. The MPS has a Class A lid, which is for pedestrian areas only. Anywhere a vehicle could drive over it needs a heavier-rated cover.

Installation

  • Stormwater stations must comply with AS/NZS 3500.3 and sewage stations with AS/NZS 3500.2, installed by a licensed plumber, with local authority approval where required.
  • Bed and backfill the well to the manufacturer's instructions so it doesn't float or deform, especially in wet ground.
  • Mount the alarm where someone will see and hear it.

The MPS range is available to order on backorder; contact PSA to confirm lead time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes with a Maxijet MPS pump station?

A polyethylene pump well, a pre-plumbed Hyjet submersible pump, a deluxe high level alarm and a square Class A poly lid.

Can the Maxijet MPS take sewage?

Yes, the sewage version uses a Hyjet HWG32-11-1A grinder pump with a 50mm outlet. The low and high flow versions are for stormwater and greywater only.

Can I drive over a Maxijet MPS lid?

No. The lid is Class A, rated for pedestrian areas. Anywhere vehicles could drive needs a higher-rated cover.

What size pump well do I need?

A bigger well cycles the pump less and holds more in reserve if the pump fails. Your plumbing design and local authority requirements usually set the minimum.
