The AVG ECV15-850-LF is a 15mm (1/2") lead free expansion control valve, colour-coded green for its 850kPa setting, designed to absorb the pressure increase caused by thermal expansion in a hot water storage system. Fitting an ECV to the cold water inlet prevents hot water discharging from the pressure temperature relief (PTR) valve on every heating cycle — protecting the PTR valve, saving energy, and extending the life of the whole system.
Both PTR and ECV valves are safety devices and should be replaced every 4 years. Where the cold water supply pressure exceeds 80% of the PTR valve's rated set pressure, AS/NZS 3500.4 requires a pressure limiting valve on the cold inlet as well — most homes and light commercial sites at mains pressure need one fitted regardless.
